Kiss Gabriella vagyok, magyar mint idegen nyelv tanár. Budapesten élek. Több mint harminc éve segítek a világ minden tájáról érkező embereknek fejleszteni magyarnyelv-tudásukat. I’m Gabriella Kiss, a teacher of Hungarian as a foreign language, based in Budapest. For over thirty years I’ve helped people from all over the world develop their skills in Hungarian. Whether you’re just beginning, reconnecting with family roots, or reaching for advanced study, I’d be glad to help. For simplicity, let’s use the informal form. English doesn’t make this distinction, though, so you won’t notice it in the English version of the text. We’ll look at the difference between informal and formal forms in our lessons.

Mint minden nyelv, a magyar is sok különböző ismeretből és készségből épül fel. A szókincs, a nyelvtan és a kiejtés mellett fontos, hogy értsd, amit hallasz és olvasol, ki tudd fejezni magad szóban és írásban, és valódi helyzetekben is tudj kommunikálni. Mindehhez a magyar kultúra is hozzátartozik.
Like any language, Hungarian is made up of many different areas of knowledge and skills. Along with vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, it is important to understand what you hear and read, to express yourself in speaking and writing, and to communicate in real-life situations. Hungarian culture is an essential part of all this, too.

Gabi szórakoztatóvá teszi a magyartanulást: sokféle módszert és technikát használ, így végig érdekes marad. Egyszerű angol nyelvi háttérrel nem könnyű, de Gabi átsegített minket ezen az átmeneten, hogy el tudjunk menni a piacra, rendelni tudjunk az étteremben, és boldoguljunk Magyarországon.
Gabi makes learning Magyarul fun, using different techniques and methods so that we were always interested. It is not easy coming from a simple English background and Gabi helped us through this transition so that we could go to the market, order at restaurants and survive in Hungary.
1997-től 1999-ig Budapesten éltem. Két évig Gabi volt a tanárom, hetente két órám volt. A magyar nehéz nyelv, de Gabi türelmes volt velem — és szigorú! —, és nagyon jól szórakoztunk. A nyelvtudás sokkal könnyebbé tette a magyarországi életet, és harminc évvel később is ez a legfontosabb idegen nyelvem.
I lived in Budapest from 1997 to 1999. Gabi was my teacher for two years; I had two lessons every week. Hungarian is hard, but Gabi was patient with me (and tough!) and we had great fun. Learning the language made living in Hungary much easier, and 30 years later it is still my number 1 foreign language.
Gabi a tökéletes tanár ahhoz, hogy valaki szilárd alapokat szerezzen a magyar nyelvben, írásban és szóban egyaránt. Néhány hónap óra után már magyarul intéztem a mindennapjaimat Budapesten; egy évnyi munka után pedig középszintű nyelvtudást igazoló bizonyítványt szereztem.
Gabi is the perfect teacher to work with to build a foundation in written and spoken Hungarian. After a few months of lessons, I was carrying out my daily interactions in Budapest in Hungarian; after a year of work, I was certified as an intermediate-level speaker.
1996-ban, egy budapesti intenzív nyelvtanfolyamon ismertem meg Gabit, és ma is nagy szerencsémnek tartom, hogy egy ilyen inspiráló, a kommunikatív módszerben otthonosan mozgó tanárral találkoztam. Az ő segítségével teljesült gyerekkori álmom, hogy megtanuljak magyarul. A nyelvtan azóta is lenyűgöz, és harminc évvel később még mindig tanulok tőle!
I met Gabi on an intensive language course in 1996 in Budapest where I still consider I was highly fortunate to have met an inspiring teacher well-versed in the communicative method. She helped me to fulfil my childhood wish to learn Hungarian. The grammar has been a source of fascination ever since, and I am still learning from her 30 years later!
